We do our best to avoid this most stressful exercise; but this may not be possible always. Ideally by the time you get to a presentation, you should be well prepared and ready to have some fun. But sometimes little problems can throw you off your game and result in a less than satisfactory talk. The best way to be ready to speak is to have a good routine that gives me peace of mind as well as prepares me for any challenges.

Get Some Exercise: This is a great way to get rid of any pre-speech jitters. Public speaking can produce a higher amount of adrenaline in your body. It’s a normal reaction to anticipating a presentation. Try getting some exercise early in the day, especially if you have a morning presentation. No one willingly gives a presentation when they don’t
believe in their presentation skills, but a lot of people are forced to in
their every day lives. Sometimes these presentations are required through
school or work or some other event but most people do have to give one sometime
in their life. No one wants to have bad presentation skills either, but
sometimes they just can’t get it right and none of the instructions on what to
do is working for them. Too often guides to becoming a good presenter focus only
on what to do and what are good presentation skills and they don’t even mention
what bad presentation skills are. Sometimes the traditional style of learning
doesn’t work for people and knowing what not to do helps them more than
anything else. Because of this need for information about bad presentation
skills, below is a detailed explanation of everything done wrong in a
presentation and why it’s bad.

There are always two steps to giving a presentation, and
because of that there are two steps in which poor choices are made. The first
is always going to be the organizational phase. The organizational phase is
when all the information for a presentation is gathered, sorted and processed
into a presentation. The number one mistake here is that it is done too late.
Procrastinating to the night before can be hard not to do, but even giving
yourself an extra day can help improve the presentation drastically.

The next example of bad presentation skills is poor
ordering. Simply throwing together all the information will create a hard to
deliver and hard to understand presentation. Along with the technical aspects
of the organization phase, it’s often viewed in bad light when you don’t write
anything down at all. Some people can naturally organize things in their head,
but all people will benefit from putting it down on paper, even if it takes a
little more time. These are the bad presentation skills that you should avoid
during the organizational phase.

The next phase, delivery, has just as many poor presentation
skills. The first and most common is muttering or speaking softly. While many
people are shy in front of crowds, muttering and speaking quietly will only
draw more attention to you than if you were to speak in a reasonable manner in
the first place; on top of that it makes your presentation impossible to
understand. The next example of bad presentation skills is ignoring the
audience. Without acknowledging they are there or making eye contact the
audience usually loses interest in what you have to say fast, and that will
make your entire presentation wasted. Finally, don’t acknowledge mistakes
during the presentation. It’s fine to discuss and reflect on how you could have
done better afterwards, but don’t interrupt the flow of the presentation to
dwell on a mispronounced word or mistake, simply correct yourself and move on;
often times an audience won’t even realize that you had made a mistake, so
acknowledging it in this fashion only makes it more pronounced. These are the bad presentation skills related to delivery.

There you have it, the worst and most prominent presentation
skills. Often time’s people won’t realize they are doing any of these and while
they’re actively utilizing the good presentation skills, they are oblivious to
the bad ones and are unable to fix them. Becoming a good presenter is a two
step process, the first is to cease using the bad presentation skills and the
second is to start using the good ones. Usually being aware of not to do will
be just as useful as knowing what to do. Knowing this is half the struggle to
become a great presenter.

4. OPENING LINE

This is an important part of your speech which many people overlook. It establishes your style and introduces you to your audience.

5. NOTES

Many people feel that they can memorize their speech but more often than not these are the people that become unstuck. Giving a speech is not a test of your memory.

Using speaker notes are acceptable; in fact an audience finds it easier to listen to a speaker that occasionally looks down at his or her notes.

Speaker cards allow you to pause and catch your breath, and to gather your thoughts.

6. DELIVERY

You should never have to shout to be heard. If a room is very large, then usually a microphone should be provided for your comfort. A good, strong, clear voice is best. Try not to mumble or run sentences together.

Pausing at the end of a point can be a powerful statement. Allow for responses such as laughter, sighs, gasps and other emotional responses.

Make eye contact with your audience, but try not to speak to every person in the room as you can not make eye contact with everyone. Select a few key people/ positions in the room, and address these positions to give the impression that you are speaking to the whole audience.

When speaking into the microphone, speak softly until you get used to the microphone volume.

Make sure you pace the speech and do not race through it as it will appear as though you cannot wait to finish.

Try being animated when delivering your speech. Avoid using one tone of voice as you will put people to sleep. Vary the emotional emphasis and your speech will hold the listeners interest.

7. RELAX

Lots of people tell me that they would like to be “a more confident speaker”, or that they would like to be able to “speak with more confidence”.The usage of these terms seems to imply that confidence is something you get more of. It implies that currently you have a certain amount of it in public speaking and you can go and get more, as if you can just grab a chunk of it and insert it into your public speaking barrel of skills. I’ve found that thinking about confidence in this way ends up making it more difficult to become more confident! If you think that it as something you can “attain”, you will probably never attain it. I used to think that confidence in public speaking was something that I could accumulate. I would “practice” confidence, like it was some sort of skill.When I would think of it in this old way I would try to “accumulate” it by trying to act or appear confident to my audience, and thought that as I spent more time appearing confident, true confidence would become natural.What Does Confidence Look Like?You’ve seen what a confident public speaker looks like – shoulders back, chest out, neck tall, eye contact strong and unwavering, voice commanding and inspiring, body language smooth and free, positive emotions emanating from within, proud stride… and many more that you are already thinking of.These are behaviours and are the external manifestations of the internal state of confidence. First, I want to tell you what confidence “is”.What Is the Internal State Called “Confidence”?My favourite teacher, Eben Pagan, has suggested a way of looking at confidence, which you may find to be helpful. Here is the thing – there is no such thing as confidence!Do you know the what a “privative” is? A privative is an absence of something. Like “cold” – this is a state involving a relative absence of heat. Or dark – a state involving a relative absence of light.Scientists once tried to make a “cold magnifier”. You know how you can use a magnifying glass to focus the suns energy at a single point? Well the scientists tried to make the equivalent for cold, using ice cubes. But you can not “aim” cold at something, because cold is just an absence of heat. The only way to make something cold is to take heat out of it. If confidence is like this, then the only way to make yourself confident is to take something out of you. What could this be?Eben Pagan suggested that the state of confidence is an absence of insecurities, fear, limiting beliefs, self-doubt etc. Think of the last time you were public speaking and felt extremely confidence – I will wager that you felt no fear, no insecurities, no limiting beliefs and no self-doubt.
